Castine, Maine 1837. This very interesting document is an order from a commanding officer to his executive officer, to give notice "to each man, in person, or by leaving at his last and usual place of abode, a written or printed order directing him to appear . . . for military duty".
At the bottom, his officer swears that all the men have been notified as directed.
