I've always been keenly interested in the negative spaces of letterforms, particularly so with the capital letter "E". Each visual in this little gallery of images shows the central negative letterspace of the cap "E" in a particular typeface. I have somewhat manipulated each one in order to crop away portions which would distract from a focus upon the center portion, and to fit the area of interest into a square for the sake of making comparisons. I apologize in advance to those type designers and typographers who may take offense to any distortion of a letterform. I greatly admire the skills and sophisticated judgement of type designers, past and present. This is but a small exercise in isolating graphic details whose abstractions I find endlessly fascinating. Each, I think, reveals something about the soul of that font.
